Stop Slice : Fix Your Swing and Hit Straighter Shots

A slice is the bane of many a golfer's existence. Seeing your well-struck shot curve sharply right instead of finding the fairway can be frustrating. But fear not! Slices are a common issue, and with a few tweaks to your swing, you can be hitting straighter shots in no time.

This post will break down the key elements that contribute to a slice and provide simple fixes with photos to help you visualize the corrections.

Understanding the Slice

A slice occurs when the clubface delivers an open angle to the ball at impact. This open angle causes the ball to spin sideways, creating a rightward curve (for right-handed golfers).

Common Causes of Slices:

  • Weak Grip: A weak grip (where the hands are rotated too far to the right) can promote an open clubface at impact.

  • Out-to-In Swing Path: An out-to-in swing path (where the club swings outside-in instead of inside-out) can also lead to an open clubface at impact.

  • Poor Posture: Incorrect posture can throw off your entire swing sequence and contribute to slicing.

Fixes for a Slice:

  1. Strengthen Your Grip:

A strong grip (hands slightly rotated counter-clockwise) helps promote a closed clubface at impact. Here's how:

  • Place your hands on the club grip as usual.
  • For right-handed golfers, feel like you're turning your left hand slightly more to the right. You should see more than two knuckles on your top hand.
  1. Focus on an Inside-Out Swing Path:

Imagine swinging on a railroad track. Your swing should follow an inside-out path, with the clubhead moving slightly inside the target line at the top of the backswing and coming down from inside-out on the downswing.

  1. Maintain Good Posture:

Stand tall with your knees slightly flexed and your weight evenly distributed on both feet. Keep your spine angled slightly forward throughout your swing.

Practice Drills:

  • Ball-Under-Arm Drill: Place a tennis ball under your armpit (on the inside of your right arm for right-handed golfers). Maintain this position throughout your swing to promote a more inside-out swing path.
  • Alignment Sticks: Set up two alignment sticks parallel to your target line, with a ball positioned slightly inside the left stick (for right-handed golfers). Focus on hitting the ball between the sticks to promote an inside-out swing path.

  • Make small adjustments and focus on feeling the changes in your swing.
  • Practice consistently to solidify the proper swing mechanics.
